Local teams win big at state dance competition

LAFAYETTE — Local teams danced their way to victory in high intensity jazz, pom and kick routines at the American All-Star Louisiana State Dance Competition Jan. 18-19 at the Cajundome in Lafayette.

The Riverside Academy Southern Sweethearts and the St. Charles Catholic Starsteppers performed for excited audiences under the dazzling stage lights.

Among all competing divisions, the Southern Sweethearts were named Louisiana State champions in the Open Category for their routine “Waves.” The winning dance was choreographed by team captain Madison Tassin and co-captains Gracie Heltz and Patience Pray. The three girls received a choreography award for their creativity.

The Southern Sweethearts also placed third overall in the Pom Category. In Division One, they won first place in the Open Category, first place in Pom and third place in Jazz.

The Southern Sweethearts perform award-winning routine “Waves” in the American All-Star Louisiana State Dance Competition.

Madison Tassin, Jaci Remondet and Jaycee Bennett competed in the solo competition. Gracie and Lexi Heltz competed in the duet competition.

The Southern Sweethearts compete under the direction of Riverside Academy’s Darryl Clement and Kristen Roccaforte.

The SCC Starsteppers also took home awards under the direction of Sarah Faucheux. In Division One, the girls placed second in the Pom Category and first in the Kick Category. The kick routine placed third overall among all divisions in the state competition. Senior Sydney Pfister is the team captain.

The Starsteppers practice almost year-round. Throughout the year, they can be found directing mini camps, performing at football games and preparing routines for state and national competitions. Nationals are held at Walt Disney World in Florida.
