Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was not just a popular figure in American History but throughout the world. Martin Luther King Jr. was an activist and pastor who organized non-violent protests in the United States. In many ways, King’s efforts to protest against violence and racial inequality have changed the world over time. He was a very successful African-American, whose activism changed the world and united people globally. It is important to me that we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day because without his words of knowledge and strong understanding we would not be where we are today.
King fought to eliminate racism and to ensure equal rights and liberties for people of color. Segregation was a huge problem during his time. African-Americans were banned from doing things similar to their white counterparts. For example, African-Americans could not use the same restrooms as whites, drink from the same water fountains, eat at the same restaurants or attend the same schools. People looked at African-Americans as monsters in society. Police officers used to pick on African-Americans for looking at them eye to eye, not being in the right place and sometimes for no reason to provoke violence. When violence arose because of these incidents, African-Americans began to protest for their rights, fires and fights broke out. There were even shootings. African-Americans were not being heard until Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stepped up to the plate and gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech that changed the world.
Unfortunately, Dr. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968. He was fatally shot while standing on the balcony outside of his room in Memphis, Tenn. Dr. King started a movement that led to change, and this is his legacy. Today. everyone can attend the same schools, share the same restrooms, eat at the same lunch tables and ride the same buses. Our world is far from perfect, but it is not as bad as it used to be. As a young man of color, I can proudly say we are free and happy because of Dr. King’s tireless efforts. He is one of the greatest men in history, and this world would not be the same if it were not for him believing in his people and thinking better of mankind. We honor him with respect and work toward keeping his legacy alive. This is why we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day!
