LAPLACE — Only two percent of high school athletes get the chance to sign a college scholarship, according to St. Charles Catholic Coach Frank Monica. Evan Roussel joined those ranks Wednesday morning in LaPlace when he signed a letter of intent to play football for Nicholls State University.

His collegiate football career follows in the footsteps of his father, Terry Roussel, and his older brother, Ryan Roussel. Terry played for Louisiana State University, while Ryan represented the River Parishes at the University of Louisiana at Monroe.

Monica coached Roussel’s father when he was a sophomore on the 1978 Lutcher High state championship football team, and the family talent has come full circle.

Evan Roussel is ready to leave his own mark on the game. He first played football around age 7 or 8 in Gramercy, but his love for the sport extends as far back as he can remember.

Nicholls seemed the next best step because it felt like home.

“It’s like family over there,” Roussel said. “I know a lot of people that go there graduated from St. Charles, so that was a factor. It was about the hospitality, and it felt like they really wanted me.”

Starting his freshman year would be the ultimate goal, but regardless of what happens, Roussel is committed to continuously improving and being the best player he can be day in and day out.

“I enjoy the brotherhood you get from football,” Roussel said. “You form friendships and relationships with guys on the team that go past football.”

At. St. Charles Catholic, Roussel has been immensely successful at left tackle on the offensive line. He earned Offensive MVP in 2018, which has proved to be a rare accomplishment for players in the trenches. Monica said Roussel could be well on his way to earning all metro and all state for his contribution to the 2019 season.

“Evan is one of the best offensive linemen we’ve ever had here,” Monica said. “He’s got excellent footwork and technique. I think Nicholls is getting a steal.”

Roussel wants to stay involved in the athletic world even after college ends. He plans to study sports medicine at Nicholls.
