EDGARD – The West St. John Rams had a successful season in 2019. The Rams won the District Championship and finished 7-4 overall after a loss to Logansport 22-14 in the 1A Quarterfinals.

Coach Brandon Walters added, “It was a good year overall. I think when we lost to Logansport, we were right there continuing to play on to the end and make it to the Dome to win it all. That’s how it goes sometimes, and you have to get back at it and continue to work hard. We’ll fight to do it again next season. That’s what we plan to do.”

Next year will be a rebuilding year for WSJ, according to Coach Walters. The Rams are losing about a dozen 2020 graduating seniors.

The Rams began the season with a tough loss to the eventual 3-A State Champion St. James, 28-6. West St. John rebounded with a three-game winning streak including a big win over 4A Plaquemine, 30-16. The Rams dominated District 9-1A play with victories over Country Day, 42 -35, Riverside, 56-27, and St. Martin’s Episcopal, 46-3.

The Rams offense put up some tremendous numbers in 2019. Quarterback D’Andre Gaudia had 2,192 yards passing with 16 touchdowns in the regular season. Running back Wantrell Williams had 1,039 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns in the regular season while being named the offensive District MVP. D’Kyri Jackson added 730 yards rushing and nine touchdowns.

Coach Walters and the team take a few moments before a recent game.

Wide receivers Trenton Grow and Kaejean Kendrick combined for over 1,300 yards receiving and 13 touchdowns on offense. Zyron Wilson was named the District MVP on defense.

Walters added, “Those kids did really well and played hard to the end. Unfortunately for us, losing in the quarterfinals is a bad thing. We’ll work hard and get back at it to see what we can do next year.”

The Rams will be losing about a dozen seniors from the 2019 squad, which is a large number for a small 1A roster.

“We’re losing a good bit of guys,” Walters said. “This was a big class of seniors, and we’ll have to get back to the drawing board.”
