Keller: Set yourself free from fear of rejection

Most people, including myself, have had a fear of people most of their life. My problem was that I was a people pleaser. I had to be delivered from the fear of people. That included those who knew me well and those I met who didn’t know me at all.

When I deal with people who abuse alcohol and illegal drugs, they have to be detoxed from the need of whatever substance to which they are addicted.

Just as a person has to be delivered from the bondage of drug use, a people pleaser has to be delivered from being a people pleaser. Being set free from the fear of rejection by people and the need to have their acceptance can only be accomplished with God’s help.

When I became a Christian in 1980, I remembered what I learned in the first grade at St. Peter School in Reserve. I was told that I should love and serve God. I’ve been forgiven for neglecting my Heavenly Father for many of my adult years.

Today, I still have a desire to be liked by people, but my only concern is pleasing God. If I succeed in doing that, I’ll never have to worry about being a people pleaser.

I’ve heard it said that the by-product of being a people pleaser is a low self-image. The Bible says we are made in God’s likeness and image. If we continue having a low self-image, I think it’s an insult to God.
