Keller: Are you a servant?

Last Friday, the men’s Bible sharing meeting was moderated by my friend, Don Villa. He spoke about being a servant as Jesus explained in Mark, Chapter 10, which states that to be great among many, you must be a servant to all. Jesus did not come to be served, but to serve. He stressed that, as Christians, we are called to be servants, keeping in mind that faith without works is dead.
He shared an example of a successful businessman, when interviewing a prospective employee, would invite the person to lunch to get to know them better and to see how they treated the person who served them. This experience would then determine if he hired that person. The bottom line is, we are judged by the way we treat others.
Don asked each of the 21 men in attendance, “Do you consider yourself a servant or do you prefer being served?”
The next question was, “Do you ever get tired of being a servant?”
The meeting was great, especially for me, as I evaluated myself and my responsibility as a servant of God.
Many people look forward to retirement from a secular job, but Christians should never retire from a life of being a servant to the King of Kings.
I often read I Timothy, Chapter 6, Verses 18 and 19, which keeps me motivated: “Let them do good, that they are rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.”
