RESERVE – One thing was certain during Friday night’s meeting of Riverside Academy and Sophie B. Wright – one team would emerge from the field with its first win of the season.
The Rebels got that first victory in a 26-6 win.
Riverside and Sophie B. Wright each entered the game 0-4 for the season, but Rebels coach Kevin Dizer knows winless does not equal hopeless. He knew Wright was equipped with talented quarterback Trevontay Alford, who faced a tough early season schedule with competition from East St. John, St. Amant, Chalmette and Helen Cox.
The Rebels’ goal for Week 5, according to Dizer, was to fight early and finish strong.
Wright was the first to reach the scoreboard in the middle of the first quarter, bringing the score to 6-0. Riverside answered with a 9-yard run for a touchdown by Ahmonte Watkins at the end of the first quarter to even the score. The Rebels took the lead in the second quarter when Connor Naquin intercepted a pass on a fake punt and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown to make the score 14-6 at halftime.
Riverside extended the lead to 20-6 in the third quarter with a Gage Larvadain touchdown run.
In the fourth quarter, Brayden Louque recovered a fumble recovery to place the Rebels on the two-yard line. Larvadain capitalized with a 9-yard rushing touchdown to bring the score to 26-6.
Riverside Academy will be on the road next week to face Southern Lab.
