LAPLACE – The St. Charles Comets hoped to keep their undefeated season alive when they hosted the (5-A) East Ascension Spartans team on Friday night. The game turned out to be a defensive battle for both teams as the Spartans defeated the Comets in a tough battle 14-6.
St. Charles and East Ascension traded punts and played the field possession game for most of the first half in a defensive struggle. The Spartans finally got on the scoreboard late in the second quarter with a touchdown pass to make the score 7-0 at halftime.
St. Charles would get the ball with good field position when Riley Leblanc intercepted the ball late in the third quarter, and the Comets took possession on the East Ascension 25-yard line. The Comets scored a few plays later on a 9-yard touchdown run by Zach Vicknair. The point after was missed, and East Ascension held on to a 7-6 lead at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Comets would turn over the ball on downs at midfield. East Ascension drove the ball deep into Comet territory. The Spartans would attempt and miss a field goal with about eight minutes remaining.
The teams continued to battle when East Ascension scored on a rushing touchdown late in the game followed by the PAT for the 14-6 victory.
St. Charles will hope to bounce back as they travel to Mississippi next Friday to play Port Gibson High School.
