Second annual Destrehan Plantation Locals’ Day coming soon

DESTREHAN — Destrehan Plantation will hold its Second Annual Locals’ Day event from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 6 on the plantation grounds located at 13034 River Road in Destrehan. Louisiana residents are invited to visit the grounds and outbuildings on the property at no cost. The Mule Barn, an ideal location for weddings and other special events, and the Creole Cottages that are available for overnight stays will be open for tours. The event will showcase the recent renovations made to the Mule Barn funded by a grant from the Norco Economic Development Fund through the Greater New Orleans Foundation.

Exhibits on the 1811 Slave Revolt, Destrehan family documents and the Jefferson Room exhibit will be open for viewing and information. Tours of the plantation house will be available at $10 for adults and $5 for children, 7-17 years of age. Children 6 and under get in free.  The public can view free demonstrations by Civil War reenactors, indigo dyeing and an in-depth commentary on the 1811 Slave Revolt. Interactive games and toys for children are available in the schoolhouse. Information about tours for school groups and other children’s clubs will be also be available in the schoolhouse.

The St. Charles Art Guild will provide a dry media activity for adults and children under a live oak. Materials will be provided by Destrehan Plantation at no cost. The St. Charles Parish Animal Shelter will have a tent with dogs available for adoption. The LSU Master Gardeners will have a tent near the French Creole garden.

The Destrehan High School Band will perform a concert on the stage of the plantation grounds beginning at 1 p.m. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets to enjoy the music. Jambalaya, white beans and hot dogs with chili will be available for purchase. Free snowballs supplied by Kona Ice will be available from noon until 3 p.m.

Meet the board of directors who will be supplying information on becoming a member of the River Road Historical Society, volunteer opportunities and information on participating in the annual Fall Festival in November.

The fully stocked shop has lots of unique gifts for your special occasions.  It features items by many local artists, with an emphasis on Louisiana and the local area.  Visitors will receive a 20 percent discount in our store, excluding consignment, food and beverages.
