RESERVE – A two vehicle fatal crash that occurred on Airline Highway at Terre Haute Road at approximately 7 a.m. Wednesday claimed the life of 27-year-old Alexis Nelson of Reserve.

Through the initial investigation, troopers with Louisiana State Police learned the crash occurred as Nelson was driving a 2018 Chevrolet Cruze southbound on Terre Haute Road in an attempt to cross Airline Highway.

At the same time, a 2020 Kenworth tractor-trailer was traveling southbound on Airline Highway. As the Chevrolet was crossing the highway, it was impacted on the passenger’s side by the tractor-trailer. Nelson was not restrained and sustained severe injuries in the crash.  She was transported to a local hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

Impairment is not suspected to have been a factor, but standard toxicology results are pending, according to Louisiana State Police. This crash is an active and ongoing investigation and no further information is available at this time. Charges in this crash may be forthcoming with the St. John District Attorney’s Office pending the completion of the investigation.

While not all crashes are survivable, Troopers would like to remind motorists that all occupants of a motor vehicle must be restrained. Statistics show that the chances of surviving a crash rise significantly when properly restrained. Making good choices while in motor vehicles, such as never driving while impaired, avoiding all distractions, and obeying all traffic laws can often mean the difference between life and death.
