On February 22, 1980, in Lake Placid, New York, at the Olympic Center, the United States hockey team defeated Russia, the four-time defending gold medalists, 4 – 3 at the Winter Olympics for the championship.  It was called the “Miracle on Ice.”

That win did as much for the United States and its pride of being an American as anything. It was the hockey team that played and won the game, but we all felt a part of the victory.

I relate that game in 1980 to what took place in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, last week as a group of 12-year-olds from Louisiana won the Little League World Championship. They proved to be the best of 770 Little League teams from around the world.

It is amazing how people throughout our country accepted these young men who handled everything with class.  I’ve heard a few sport fans say that it felt almost as good as a team winning the Super Bowl.  

To me there’s no comparison.  I could care less who wins the Super Bowl, but I am still excited about a group of 12-year-olds who are, hopefully, making all Americans feel good and maybe changing the attitude of our leaders to work together for the good of the country.
