St. Charles Catholic High School Builds on Tradition

LAPLACE The tradition of academic excellence, civic responsibility, and strong Christian values remains the foundation of St. Charles Catholic High School as the Comets look forward to a new school year.  St. Charles Catholic attracts and educates a diverse student body due to its religious instruction, comprehensive academics, competitive athletics and active community involvement.  Students at SCC not only nourish their minds but also deepen their faith in preparation for rising up as tomorrow’s leaders. As the educational and spiritual leader of the River Parishes, SCC maintains a well-balanced curriculum in an effort to meet the needs of all students.  It strives to develop the total student – spiritually, academically, physically and socially.

The students’ spiritual formation is an ongoing process that begins each year with both faculty and grade-level retreats. Throughout the year, SCC students receive the opportunity to attend retreats on and off campus as well as to participate in weekly meetings and summer camps through the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and various Campus Ministry events.

We’re very thankful for our new stand-alone Chapel which embodies the school’s tradition of having a Christ-centered environment as it gives our students a designated space to celebrate Masses, hold retreats, and participate in Eucharistic adoration. Daily religion classes and opening prayer in all classes support the spiritual development of students at SCC; and out of recognition for the importance of liturgy, we hold school wide Mass at least once per month in addition to reconciliation services during Advent and Lent and two school wide rosary prayer services.

Three programs of study facilitate the academic development of the student– an honors program, including Advanced Placement courses in English, Civics, American History, and Language and Composition; an academic program; and a standard program. Aiding in student academic formation is the 1:1 program with Apple iPads for students in the 8th – 10th grades, and this year, new Mac laptops will be issued for our juniors and seniors.

Incoming St. Charles Catholic High School Principal, Dr. Courtney Millet is excited to begin the school year. She is pictured with a group of soon to be SCC Seniors in the schools newly renovated state of the art MAC Lab. “I look forward to returning to St. Charles Catholic High School as its Principal and Spiritual Leader with a great sense of enthusiasm, commitment, faith, and purpose. Our standard of excellence in education combined with an atmosphere where Christian values are practiced, taught, and developed help make SCC the academic and spiritual leader for the River Parishes,” stated Dr. Millet.

As a technology leader in the River Parishes, SCC offers students the chance to utilize the many applications that Apple offers as a means of enhancing our curriculum. Teachers continue to use interactive wall panels and Mac devices in their daily instruction while students use their iPads and laptops to participate in activities that enhance critical thinking, encourage analysis, and facilitate research within the classroom and at home.  Our two new computer labs provide space for our Digital Design, Multi-Media, and Code Design classes, which give the students the technological skills they’ll need in the jobs of tomorrow.

In the past four years, more than 80 percent of SCC graduates earned college scholarships due largely to the fact that SCC’s composite ACT score ranks above both the state and national averages. Another we prepare Comets for college is through the dual-enrollment program, which offers students an opportunity to earn high school and college credit simultaneously with many students earning credit in multiple courses. Calculus is the most recent addition to SCC’s dual-enrollment program which also includes English, Biology, Spanish, and College Algebra.

During the past 5 years, SCC students have completed more than 1000 credit hours through the dual-enrollment partnership with Southeastern Louisiana University. Students have gained an academic advantage through the credits earned and through experiencing a college curriculum.

The physical development of the student is maintained by a required two years of Physical Education. All students are encouraged to participate in the many interscholastic athletic programs offered at SCC, including baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, softball, swimming, track and field, tennis, volleyball, cheerleading, and dance team.  Our teams consistently perform at a competitive level and earn many accolades and championships due largely to the unique athletics facilities we offer on campus, including our soon-to-be completed new football stadium.

Comets receive social development through the many extracurricular activities SCC offers, which includes a variety of academic clubs, service organizations, and spirit teams.  These groups meet the interests of the students and supplement classroom learning, allowing them to explore their talents and meet like-minded friends.

Last year, approximately 90 percent of the student body was involved in one or more extracurricular activities, and St. Charles Catholic student-athletes excel both on the field and in the classroom, More than a dozen students have scored a 30 or higher on the ACT during the past three school years, with that number steadily rising as we continue to help students improve in all testing skills.

St. Charles Catholic is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, approved by the Louisiana State Board of Elementary and Secondary Schools and affiliated with the National Catholic Educational Association.
