LAPLACE — Wayne Stein, head baseball coach of St. Charles Catholic High School, was recently chosen to receive the Greater New Orleans Boys’ Prep Coach of the year honor at Allstate Sugar Bowl’s Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Banquet in August.

SCC won its first state title in its eighth trip to the championship game, winning a 7-4 upset of top-seed University Lab. Stein’s sixth-seeded Comets won 17 of their final 19 games and defeated the top three seeds to win the Division II state title.

The Greater New Orleans Sports Awards Committee, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, selects annual award winners in a variety of categories. It also selects Amateur Athletes of the Month and each year’s Hall of Fame class. Overall, 26 individuals and two teams will be honored at the banquet.
