LAPLACE — Three officers with the St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office were honored June 27 during Citizens Academy graduation by Acadian Ambulance Services for administering outstanding care to a victim who had been shot several times.
The tourniquets the officers applied to the victim’s arms and legs were essential, according to Acadian Ambulance Services operation manager Kevin Brennan, since the subject had lost a critical amount of blood. Any further loss of blood may have caused his immediate death.
Brennan and emergency medical technician Chad Duhe, who is also a reserve officer for the St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office, presented Acadian’s Meritorious Service Award to Cpl. Daniel Materne, Deputy Seth Rome and Lt. Jason Raborn.
Officers Raborn, Materne, and Rome, like all POST officers at the St. John Sheriff’s Office, participate in University Medical Center New Orleans’ Stop The Bleed training that teaches participants simple medical care that stops hemorrhaging. Officers also are equipped with a tourniquet and gauze kit to carry while on duty.
Stop The Bleed training is part of Sheriff Mike Tregre’s continuing education program for officers.
