Keller: Recent high school graduate sets out to serve his country

The majority of students who recently graduated from high school are uncertain as to what they want to do. Many take time off to celebrate with parties, go on a vacation or take cruises with other classmates.
Others just want to take a couple of months off and do nothing. When that becomes a habit and they get used to it, they will soon realize that when doing nothing, you never know when you are finished.
Today, I’m writing about a high school graduate whom I’ve never met. His name is Blake Roy, who graduated from Covington High School.
I learned about Blake’s plan when I went to the First American Bank in LaPlace.
His aunt, Lisa, who is my friend, shared with me that Blake left for the Army the day after we celebrated Memorial Day.
Blake’s mother, Brandy, who is Lisa’s sister, is a single mom.
As Lisa shared about Blake, I was impressed to stop talking and asked Lisa if we could pray. I took her hand and we prayed for Blake’s safety and that the family, proud of his decision, but sad, would have a peace that only God could give them. Saddened with tears, Lisa thanked me.
She told me that Blake never played sports, but was in the ROTC and was serious about the program. After Boot Camp at Fort Benning, Georgia, his goal is to apply for the Army Ranger School.
I don’t get emotional with many of my articles, but this one touched me.
A young man, 18 years old, joining the military to serve his country and protect our freedoms, and in the process growing mentally, physically, and I pray, spiritually.
Even though I’ve never met Blake, I hope to one day.
My prayer is that he will stay focused on God’s purpose for his life.
