Keller: Can you add to your church service?

After dropping Jeanne off in front of a church in Kenner, which we frequently attend, I proceeded to park the car.

On my way to the church, I noticed a young man in a wheelchair struggling with something in his van.

I asked if I could help. He said, “Yes, push me.”

It was my pleasure to meet this young man named Jose.

As we approached the entrance of the church, two pleasant greeters opened the door. I thanked them and said, “I’m bringing in one of the most important people that will be at this church today.”

They smiled and agreed. I then pushed him to the place he directed me.

When the service was over, I hurried to get to him in hopes of helping him back to his van.

“No, thanks!” he said. “I work with Kingdom Kids, a Sunday school for children from grades first through sixth, for the next service.”

He thanked me as I hugged him and told him I loved him. He just smiled.

As I left that service, I thought that most people go to church because of a religious habit, hoping to receive something and feel good, but seldom consider what they could contribute. Regardless of how good the message is, it might just make you feel good, but never change you.

The message was good, but what spoke to me more than words, was the commitment and action that Jose, in a wheelchair, exhibited last Sunday.

I’m sure I’ll forget the message, but never Jose’s desire to serve the King of Kings through his church.
