Shirley Weidert Gebbia, 90, passed away on Sept. 28, 2018, after a valiant battle with a long-term illness. Her devotion to her family and a firm belief in God supported her in her struggle and ultimately gave her peace.

Shirley Weidert Gebbia

She was born Nov. 1, 1927, in New Orleans, the last of nine children. She was a longtime resident of Chalmette and moved to LaPlace after Hurricane Katrina.

Shirley enjoyed her trips to the casinos along with working crossword puzzles, saying her prayers and giving hand made necklaces to anyone she met.

It was her devotion to the “spoiling” of her beloved dogs that made all take notice. A friend once said, “After I die, I want to come back as Shirley’s dog.”

She is reunited with her husband of 60 years, Joe, and first-born son, Wayne.

She leaves to cherish her loving memory her son Brian (Kathie); her daughter Karen; six grandchildren, Sherry (Fred) DeFrancesch, Gina (Sal) Hontiveros, Darrin (Suzanne) Hirsch, Mike (Ashley) Gebbia, Mark (Kelli) Gebbia, and Jenny Gebbia (Adam Ducoing); and eight great grandchildren, Zachery and Renee Hirsch, Cade and Amelia Hontiveros, Mason and Anna Turnipseed, and Samantha and Ben DeFrancesch.

Friends and relatives attended a visitation and funeral service Oct. 3 at St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home and Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that you would follow Shirley’s lead and do an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness for someone in her name.
