EDGARD — Shamar Pierre and Khristian Rousseve are lifelong friends that share a common interest in fishing, which means they can often be found on the water in their free time.

Shamar and Khristian, who are ninth graders, connected their love of fishing and water conservation to their school, West St. John High, launching a fishing club with the goal of sharing their expertise with others.

They entered several fishing tournaments through Louisiana High School Bass Fishing under the guidance of mentor Vernon Silver, an avid fisher and competitive outdoor sportsman.

The team fared well in their first year of competition, ending in 151st out of 328 teams in Louisiana.

They recently received sponsorship from Duck Ice to help with competition fees and expenses and are still looking to grow the sport at West St. John High through contributions from other sponsors.

Those interested in helping out the West St. John Anglers are asked to contact Rochelle Darville at rdarville@stjohn.k12.la.us for more information.
