LAPLACE — Slated to open at 701 W. Airline Highway in LaPlace by the end of summer, Old Skool Bar seeks to stand apart in its elegant atmosphere and retro touch.

Owner Erica White envisions a 25 and up crowd reveling in the laidback atmosphere, sipping drinks with friends as classic music plays overhead.

With upscale accommodations and an interior design calling back memories of the good ol’ days, White expects Old Skool Bar will fill a void in St. John the Baptist Parish.

Years of visiting bars has shown White that adult oriented businesses can take off when driven by the right chemistry and a positive attitude.

“Since I’ve been involved in supporting the industry, I decided that this was something I wanted to pursue as an investment,” White said.

“I want to bring a nice, upscale adult atmosphere bar to our location. I think LaPlace needs that. I’ve lived here for 10 years, and there’s no location where mature adults can get down, have a nice drink and socialize.”

The key to running a successful business, according to White, lies in providing a people-friendly environment.

For now, she’s focused on applying for liquor licensing, updating plumping in the location and finalizing health and fire inspections.

Once ready to begin the hiring process, White will search for employees with three essential qualities: experience, patience and a willingness to make people feel at home.

“The best way to keep the establishment with our motto, “Old Skool,” is to put mature bartenders in there that will keep people safe and make them feel welcome,” White said. “You need to have an approachable attitude to attract people to your establishment.”

Though drink selections won’t be finalized until the business nears opening, White is finding inspiration from her travels.

Caribbean-style flavors may be incorporated into ladies night specialty drinks, White said.

Opening Old Skool Bar is a journey White is currently taking on her own. However, she’s open to sponsorship opportunities from interested community partners. For more information, call White at 504-270-7530.
