BOUTTE — The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating a fatal helicopter crash that occurred Sunday in St. Charles Parish.

According to St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne, Kenneth Gestal was piloting an Air2 that was contracted by Entergy to perform services on the Entergy transmission line right-of-way.

The helicopter crashed shortly before 11 a.m. Sunday in marsh off of Magnolia Ridge Road in Boutte after getting caught in electrical wires.

Police said the first two occupants of the helicopter, a crewman and the pilot, were located and taken to a local hospital.

The crewman, Chance Mills, 33, of Missouri sustained what appeared to be severe injuries.

The pilot, 38-year-old Kenneth Gestal of Florida sustained less severe injuries.

The Sheriff’s Office said the third occupant — Ryan Lamont Cardwell of Watonga, Okla. — was pronounced dead on the scene of the crash site.

Cardwell was 33.

First responders were only able to access the scene by airboat, all terrain tracked vehicles and helicopter due to the remote location of the crash.
