Keller: Find purpose in your self-image

Years ago, in dealing with a young, intelligent man who had recently dropped out of college and forfeited his paid scholarship, I was surprised as we discussed his situation.
In the conversation, I asked if he had a good self-image.
With tears in his eyes, he sadly said, “No.” This young man was popular in high school, a good athlete, never in trouble and had all the tools to be very successful.
I’ve kept in touch with him and on every occasion, I encourage him to be the godly man God created him to be.
I often tell him that if we are created in God’s image, it’s an insult to God to have a low self-image.
I stress that a healthy self-image is seeing yourself as God sees you — no more and no less. All you have to be is what God made you.
The more we see ourselves as God sees us, the more we become aware of how much God loves us. When that happens, you become a positive person because our Heavenly Father is a positive God and we can claim I Corinthians 2:9, “Eye had not seen, or ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”
I pray to live long enough to see what God has in the future for this talented young man.
