Keller: Alcohol use jumps before Christmas

Now that Thanksgiving is over, we move on and look forward to the next holidays, Christmas and New Year’s.

Since many Americans have taken Christ out of Christmas, it’s a time to eat, drink and be merry. During the period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, we will witness more alcohol consumption and illegal drug use than at any other time.

The alcohol commercials will be some of the most attractive, and the drug dealers will have more requests for their mind-altering chemicals.

The original celebration of Christmas was to honor Jesus as our Savior. The “Merry Christmas” greeting we used to hear is replaced with “Happy Holidays.”

The liberals, with the cooperation of the government and many business establishments, have sent a message, loud and clear, that we don’t want to offend others with our religious beliefs.

That seems to be changing. President Donald Trump, on his victory tour in Michigan and Wisconsin, opened his remarks with, “Merry Christmas! It’s not “Happy Holidays” anymore.”

He shared that he believes the businesses will realize that it’s about the meaning of Christmas and not just another holiday.

Maybe we’re beginning to realize and act on what the Bible says in Matthew 10:32, “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father in heaven.”

One week after Christmas, we will welcome a new year, 2018. It’s during the month of January that more people seek help for alcohol or illegal drug abuse. The sad news is that most will not succeed.
