LAPLACE — The public is invited to come out to Greenwood Park for a day of food, fun and fellowship Saturday afternoon at the second annual Let’s Do Lunch in the Park, hosted by the Mission Church – LaPlace campus.
Free and open to all ages, the event commences at 12:30 p.m. and includes a hamburger and hotdog barbecue, outdoor activities and bouncy houses for children.
The Saints game will be displayed on a big screen so football fans can watch along with neighbors, and representatives from the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office and Fire Department will make special appearances dressed as superheroes.
Greenwood Park is located across the street from LaPlace Elementary, where the Mission Church – LaPlace Campus has held service each Sunday for the past year and a half.
The barbecue will follow the church’s morning service, which begins at 10:30 a.m.
Attending service is not required to take part in the barbecue, according to Pastor Nick Peppo. However, anyone interested in learning more about Mission Church is welcome to join him in worship.
Peppo said Let’s Do Lunch at the Park brings people together and focuses on family-oriented fun.
“We’re a family church,” Peppo said. “We want everyone to come together as a community and get neighbors to meet one another.”
The event attracted a couple hundred people last year and was in alignment with the church’s mission to keep the family together, according to leadership committee member Suzanne Karst.
Karst started attending the Mission Church – LaPlace campus with her husband shortly after it opened a year and a half ago, and she described the church as down to earth, warm and receptive.
“It’s Biblically based,” Karst said. “It’s based on giving people practical tools to live a healthy and productive life. Our aim is to make everyone feel welcome.”
The Mission Church is founded on the belief that every person has the ministry in their hearts and strives to build big people who do big things for God, Peppo said.
