LAPLACE — A local man, who police said was first detained by a helpful resident preventing a vehicle burglary, was sentenced this month to three years probation following his guilty plea.
According to the St. John the Baptist Parish Clerk of Court’s Office, Donte Labranche, 19, of LaPlace pleaded guilty to simple burglary Sept. 11 and was sentenced to 10 years suspended with the Department of Corrections and given three years active probation.
Labranche was also given, according to the Clerk’s office, credit for 319 days of time served from Oct. 16, 2016. According to the Clerk’s office, Labranche’s sentence is to run concurrent with another case and his probation will not be revoked if he completes a judge-ordered drug program.
Labranche was also assessed $1,865 in fines and fees and a $71 monthly probation fee.
The defendant made headlines last year when police said an alleged vehicle burglar got more than he bargained for during an early morning break-in.
St. John Sheriff Mike Tregre said when deputies responded to a River Pointe home in Reserve at 5:13 a.m. Oct. 30, 2016, they found the owner of the vehicle had a perpetrator detained on the ground.
“No one was injured during the incident,” Tregre said. “The 43-year-old male victim told deputies that when he was leaving for work, he saw the perpetrator in the passenger seat of his vehicle. He detained the perpetrator and called the Sheriff’s Office.”
Deputies identified the suspect as Labranche and arrested him, recovering blue-tooth earphones stolen from the vehicle in the process.
At the time, Tregre said Labranche had been arrested in St. John Parish four times since June 2015 for shoplifting, simple burglary of a motor vehicle (five counts) and aggravated battery.
