St. John Parish plans 4-H week of fun Oct. 1-7

It is almost time to start wearing green and clovers for a week-not to avoid a pinch-but to celebrate National 4-H week, Oct. 1-7, 2017.

According to 4-H’s Positive Youth Development research, youth involved in 4-H make more healthy choices, excel in school and the sciences and are committed to improving their communities. There is something for everyone in 4-H.

Projects include photography, nutrition, public speaking, livestock, wetlands education, community service, sewing and much more.

As a proud 4-Her, volunteer or parent, you celebrate National 4-H Week with something green every day. You can take time to reflect on what 4-H really means to you that week, and be thankful for all that 4-H has helped you achieve.

Each club or member can get involved as much as they want to celebrate 4-H in their own unique way. Four-Hers can give a presentation to their school or local government about the amazing opportunities 4-H has to offer and/or what 4-H has done for them.

A club can make buttons or ribbons for members to wear on a designated day. Members can hold a service project to help someone in their own community. Host a blood drive.

One thing each club can do is, show off their spirit in any way or form to earn the title as “Most Spirited Club.” Each club can decorate classroom(s), hallways or the whole school to show off how much 4-H means to them.

If your school allows, wear green or a favored 4-H shirt. For the schools or clubs who want to be involved in this activity, the leader must contact 4-H.

There will also be a Facebook contest going on during National 4-H week. Like the St. John Parish 4-H page and look for the enrollment post on Oct. 1. Share this “post” and whoever has the most “likes” on their share by Oct. 6 will win a $10 gift card to Walmart. Any 4-H member, parent of a member, of 4-H volunteer can enter in this contest.

Now is the perfect time to become involved in 4-H. Each fall, 4-H clubs re-organize and enroll new members and leaders.
