Keller: Children’s school memories are special

At the start of another school year, it makes me reflect when my children were in grammar school. It’s been a long time since Ronny, Matt, Kay and Ann attended St. Peter School in Reserve, but I still treasure some of my fondest memories.
When my son, Matt, was examined to see if he needed glasses, he was asked if he ever had trouble seeing the blackboard. He answered, “Sometimes I do.”
The next question was: “When do you have the most trouble?”
“When the teacher stands in front of it.”
After the doctor had a good laugh, he proceeded with the exam.
My daughter, Ronny, came home from school one day all excited and said, “Guess what my teacher said today?”
Before I could ask what, she said, “People in high positions don’t have good attitudes because they are in high positions, they are in high positions because of their good attitudes.”
My other daughters, Kay and Ann, recall how I would bring them lunch from Mac’s Grill. They also remembered when I would check them out of school early and take them to the racetrack. (This was before I became a Christian.)
Since my children’s time at school, Jeanne and I have experienced our 15 grandchildren starting school and attending their activities.
Now, we are seeing our great grandchildren going through their school days.
Looking back and recalling those special times are refreshing, but I admit it can leave you feeling a little lonely, but thankful that those were very special years.
