Letter: Chamber offers opportunities for all

Summer is nearing completion. We parents are working on getting the kids ready for school and many are trying to take those final vacation days at the beach. I hope you had some great family time and personal time as well.

The Chamber has been steadily working on several key strategies this year. As you know, with NFIP back in the limelight and questions about health care costs and effects on our businesses, we plan to discuss these and other topics at the upcoming RRCC Washington Fly-In Sept. 27-28.

Do you want to have face-to-face time with our legislators to ask questions and share your concerns?

In fact, our legislators look forward to us coming to meet with them in Washington, as it strengthens our presence and provides them with first-hand information they need to work on our behalf.

Concerns about flood protection, business taxation, agriculture, gas prices, etc. — you name it — this opportunity is open to all members! Call the Chamber office for more information.

Do you know what a “new collar” worker is?

New Collar worker describes careers of a two-year post-secondary degree and/or certifications yielding job earnings of $40k plus per year — enough to support a family and encourage emerging leadership in our communities.

Through our collaboration with LouisianaCalling.org, RRCC is working with various community and business leaders to formulate a plan to improve awareness and provide direction for people looking for a solid career.

Research has shown that 71 percent of Louisianans do not have a post-secondary degree. It has also shown that a two-year degree or certification is necessary to earn a family friendly wage ($40k – $80k).

Your Chamber is in process of developing a marketing plan rich in digital media and technology to reach as many citizens as possible. Millennials will be a focused target group to greater gain their interest in current workforce readiness programs.

Finally, I want to thank our Chair-Elect, Kim Bourgeois, for her commitment to get the first Leadership River Region off the ground! Haven’t heard of Leadership River Region? Get ready business leaders! RRCC is hosting its first class of a diverse business group looking to explore the needs, resources and opportunities for the tri-parish communities.

This is a great resume builder, as well as an opportunity to get in depth exposure to the inner workings of our three-parish area. If ever you want to learn how you can give to your community, improve economic development support and champion our futures’ sustainability, Leadership River Region is the way to go.

Time is running out to get applications in — call the chamber office for more information.
