BOUTTE — Detectives with the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office were able to secure a warrant Thursday in relation to a shooting that took place Wednesday morning at a Burger King in Boutte, St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne said.
During the investigation, it was learned the victim, who worked for an A.T.M. reloading company, was headed to Thibodaux to service A.T.Ms. While headed to his morning route, the victim stopped at Racetrac in Boutte to purchase food. After entering the store, the victim learned the Internet was down, preventing him from making a purchase.
The victim then drove across U.S. 90 to Burger King, where he ordered food in the drive-thru. After receiving his food, the victim observed a male subject approaching his vehicle. The suspect said something to the victim that he was unable to understand, at which time the suspect produced a handgun and shot the victim one time in the left forearm.
The victim fled the scene, driving his vehicle to La Quinta Inn, located just down the street from Burger King. The victim entered the hotel lobby, seeking medical attention.
The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office received a call from the La Quinta Inn at 10:13 a.m. informing the Sheriff’s Office of there being a gunshot victim inside the hotel.
Once investigators arrived on scene, the victim was taken to University Hospital to receive treatment for a gunshot wound to his wrist. Video surveillance footage revealed the gunman fleeing to a vehicle that was parked in the parking lot at IHOP on U.S. 90 in Boutte. The suspect then fled the scene eastbound on U.S. 90.
During the investigation, detectives were able to develop a person of interest, leading the Sheriff’s Office to seek a warrant for Damon Bryant, 19, of Avondale.
With assistance form the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, authorities located and arrested Bryant.
Bryant is currently being held at the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office Correctional Facility, awaiting charges in St. Charles for attempted murder and attempted armed robbery.
Through a release, the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s extended “a special thanks” to everyone who aided in the investigation, including Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, St. Charles Parish Public School Board, employees of the La Quinta Inn, surrounding businesses in the area and the concerned citizens in the community that came forward with information pertaining to the incident.
