Keller: Pleasantries offer chance at connection
Published 12:01 am Wednesday, July 26, 2017
Every morning when I wake up, I confess Psalm 118:24, “This is the day which the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”
After I prayed Monday, I was reminded that I had an 8:40 appointment with the dentist. I love Dr. Bobby Ory, his sons and all the staff at the clinic; however, going to the dentist is not something that excites me.
As I was seated in the waiting room with two ladies, a gentleman opened the door and I said, “Good Morning, Sir!” He responded, “What you just said, I repeat at least 15 times a day. People don’t exchange pleasantries as you did very often.”
His name was Ambrose Harris. I asked his age and he said, “It’s my birthday today. I’m 74.”
In the course of our conversation, he shared that he and his wife, Angerean, have traveled a lot, but now live in LaPlace.
Mr. Ambrose and I spoke of family and religion. We have a few things in common. We both are Navy veterans and agree that God’s not concerned about what your religion is, but instead, whether you have a personal relationship with His Son, Jesus.
He has a daughter, Alanna, who is an electrical engineer and works for the U.S. Navy.
She lives in Jacksonville, Fla., with her husband, Jay, who is the pastor of The Ville Church, a non-denominational church and their nine children.
As we were enjoying our conversation, the attendant opened the door and called for “Mr. Harold.”
Mr. Ambrose thought they said, Mr. Harris. He jumped up and was about to get in front of me when I said, laughingly, “Look, I like you, but you’re not getting in front of me.”
He smiled and sat down.
When leaving the office, I thought about, “This is the day which the Lord has made, and I was rejoicing that my visit was successful, no problems and about my new friend, Mr. Ambrose.”
