LAPLACE — Kristie Jackson could hardly believe the TV news reports on the one-year anniversary of the police shootings in Baton Rouge.

The owner of the popular Donut Hole breakfast spot in LaPlace said it seemed like only yesterday residents were mourning the deaths of three officers and the wounding of three others by a gunman.

The city of Baton Rouge marked the anniversary of the shooting July 17 with a memorial ceremony, which included a balloon release.

All state and local police can stop by the Donut Hole and receive a free travel mug of coffee and a hot glazed donut through July 28.

“Has it really been a year already?” Jackson said. “I just couldn’t believe it. I remember when all that happened.”

Jackson said she has great affection for the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s deputies and Louisiana State Troopers, many of whom are regular customers of the local eatery. She knows most of the officers by name.

So Jackson decided to show them how much she cares.

All week and continuing through July 28, all state and local police can stop by the Donut Hole and receive a free travel mug of coffee and a hot glazed donut (or four donut holes) as a token of appreciation.

“We love our officers,” Jackson said.

“They come in here a lot. They take such good care of us. This is just one way for us to show them we care about them. I don’t know. Maybe they’ll look at that coffee mug and say, ‘I know those ladies at the Donut Hole are thinking about us.’”

The Donut Hole, which offers a wide variety of freshly baked donuts, breakfast biscuits and kolachies is located at 421 W. Airline Highway.

It is open from 4 a.m. to noon, Tuesday through Sunday.
