West Nile worries addressed on West Bank

EDGARD — Andrew Carpenter, a biologist with the St. John Mosquito Control Services, calmed fears of the spread of the West Nile Virus in parts of the parish.

Carpenter told Parish Council members although no people cases were reported, there were mosquitoes found on the West Bank carrying the virus.

Once that happened, Carpenter said his team went door to door canvassing the neighborhood, informing neighbors what to look for, including anything that was holding standing water and repairing tears in window screens.

He said his department is treating drains, roadside ditches and any standing water, and they also ran spray trucks for three consecutive nights, which he said went well.

“It was a very thorough response and a good chance to get the word out to the public,” he said.
