RESERVE — For the third consecutive year, the percent of students in St. John the Baptist Parish Public Schools scoring “mastery” or above on Louisiana’s LEAP assessment has increased, school officials said.
This continues the St. John the Baptist Parish Public School District’s pattern of steady progress in getting students to the “mastery” level — a level the Louisiana Department of Education identifies as students being ready for the next grade level and indicating college and career readiness.
“While we are pleased that our scores continue to rise, there is much more work to do to prepare our students for college and career readiness,” Superintendent Kevin George said. “Our School Board and all 924 employees are working daily to ensure academic and social success for our students and community.”
The results are based on the spring 2017 administration of the LEAP Assessment, which measures student proficiency in English language arts, math, science and social studies in grades 3 through 8.
During the most recent school year, the number of St. John the Baptist Parish Public School students scoring “mastery” or above increased in all content areas in which scores were released.
Students can score at five levels – advanced, mastery, basic, approaching basic and unsatisfactory.
Since 2015, the percentage of students in the district scoring mastery or above has increased two percentage points. Students pass the test if they score at the “basic” level.
In addition, since 2015, most individual schools showed growth in students reaching “mastery” or above.
Two of the district’s schools, Garyville/Mt. Airy Math and Science Magnet and East St. John Elementary, ranked in the top third of all schools in the state for increases in their share of students reaching “mastery.”
