Myhand: DIVE IN — Area pools offer treatment, relief

The Bayou Region may be home to multiple bodies of water, but indoor community pools are often difficult to find in that number.
The new Aquatics Center inside Thibodaux Regional Medical Center’s state-of-the-art Wellness Center features three specialized pools.
The first pool is a competition pool, designed for those who love to get their exercise in swimming laps. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, swimming is the fourth most popular sports activity in the United Sates and is a good way to get regular aerobic physical activity.
Swimming provides a full-body workout and is beneficial because it is an exercise for most anyone and is an excellent form of cardio.
Additionally, private or group swimming lessons are also available for Fitness Center members and non-members.
The second pool inside the new Aquatics Center is a therapy pool, designed for group exercise classes or therapy sessions. Classes held in the therapy pool include water aerobics, aqua Zumba, aqua Pilates, aqua arthritis and more.
There are many benefits of water exercise including:
• Improved motion and flexibility.
• Increased muscle strength.
• Provides resistance for strength training.
• Eases pressure off of joints and muscles.
• Relieves mental, physical and emotional stress.
• Enhanced sense of wellbeing.
The final pool may be the most intriguing one of all: the Hydroworx Therapy Pool.
The Hydroworx Therapy Pool has an adjustable floor with an underwater treadmill and jet technology, which makes therapy and exercise an option sooner in the recovery phase for those with limited mobility or during a patient’s physical therapy program when applicable.
Aquatic therapy can make treatment and exercise less painful, and as a result, more successful, leading to improved quality of life.
Aquatic Therapy is beneficial for patients suffering the following conditions: Arthritis, surgery recovery, sports injuries, spinal cord and brain injury, sprains and strains, chronic back, foot, ankle or knee pain, stroke and balance disorders.
