St. John deputy airlifted for medical treatment, struck on I-10

LAPLACE — A St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy was airlifted for medical treatment this morning after he was injured while working the scene of a wreck on Interstate 10.

Sgt. Staty Lewis, an eight-year veteran of the department, was working the scene on I-10 near I-55 when he reached into his unit to grab a first-aid kit. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Lewis’ unit was rear ended at that time.

Lewis was airlifted to University Medical Center in New Orleans, where he is being treated for a broken shoulder blade and other minor injuries. He is expected to be released today.

The collision occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. today.

Louisiana State Police is handling the investigation of both crashes.
