LAPLACE — St. John Parish Sheriff Mike Tregre said he was excited to welcome mentors and participants in the SJSO’s new Distinguished Gentlemen’s Club to the group’s first event this week at Avis’ Kitchen in LaPlace, while adding more community participation is still being sought.

Tregre is seeking community leaders to serve as volunteers and work with local officers in presenting the program.

Those interested in assisting with the program should call Vernon Bailey Jr. at 985-359-8775.

The group met for a dinner Tuesday featuring guest speakers St. John Schools Superintendent Kevin George and Pastor Devin Mason of New Rescue Mission Baptist Church.

George and Mason encouraged participants to work hard, get involved in the community and lead by example.

During the dinner meeting, participants introduced themselves and talked about their hobbies and goals. Officers, who are serving as mentors, and the participants from all local high schools also took some time to become better acquainted.

Lt. Freddie Young said he and several of his fellow officers are happy to guide the young men in building traits of good character that will prepare them to be productive members of society, as well as assist the young men in obtaining skills needed to become positive influences in the community.

Skills will be introduced and reinforced through lessons, experiences and interactions that will deepen and broaden their knowledge to become distinguished gentlemen.

“I’m thrilled to get this program off the ground,” Tregre said. “We will do our best to be here for you, to help you to become a great leader and role model.”
