PAULINA — The LSU AgCenter, West St. James Farm Bureau and East St. James Farm Bureau will host the Ninth Annual St. James Parish Tomato Field Day at 5:30 p.m. June 1 at T-Black Millet, 2124 Millet St. in Paulina.
Field day activities include discussions on new tomato, bell pepper and cucumber varieties; insect issues and controls; and disease issues and controls.
There will also be a taste test of the tomato varieties planted for the field day.
Craig Roussel, horticulture agent for St. James and Ascension/ Parishes, said organizers are featuring winners of taste tests from past years and the original LSU Creole variety.
“It will be interesting to see if the claim that tomatoes don’t taste like they used to holds up,” Roussel said.
Additionally, the winners of the 2017 Youth and Adult Garden Contest will be announced.
“We will also have the Fourth Annual Biggest Tomato Contest,” Roussel said. “Anyone wishing to enter this contest should bring their biggest tomato to the field day with them. We will have a weigh-in, and the winner will be announced on the spot.”
