A four-door Chevy truck ran into the back of an East St. John High School bus containing almost 30 students Friday afternoon, a wreck that sent 14 children to the hospital, authorities said.
The St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office said it is investigating the wreck, which took place at 2:30 p.m. at St. Andrews and Belle Terre boulevards in LaPlace.
Emergency medical personnel arrived on the scene, and school officials said 27 students were reported on the bus.
“None of the injuries seem to be catastrophic or serious, but there were 14 students that were brought to area hospitals to be checked out and examined,” St. John Parish Public Schools Superintendent Kevin George said. “There was a person that rear ended a bus. They ran into the back of the bus pretty good.”
All 14 children, as well as the driver, were treated for minor injuries, police said.
George said the bus driver acted quickly and correctly, alerting authorities immediately and next calling the Main Office to alert the transportation supervisor.
According to George, School District officials were on the scene within ten minutes, assisting students and parents seeking to get home safely.
Family members with questions are encouraged to call the superintendent’s office at 985-536-1106.
The Sheriff’s Office said its investigation is ongoing and more information would be released at a later date.
