Keller: Serenity Prayer delivers useful message

Published 12:01 am Saturday, February 4, 2017

Years ago, I was involved in a 12-step recovery program that started each meeting with the Serenity Prayer.

It’s a powerful prayer that I’ve used over the years. The only version I had ever heard was the short version.

Monday, I had my eyes checked by Dr. Ronald Aslett.

I never look forward to the exam, but enjoy his conversation.

As I was leaving, he handed me the following, which is the extended version of the prayer, written by Reinhold Niebuhr.

Hope you enjoy it and maybe use it as part of your daily prayer life.

SERENITY PRAYER

God, grant me the SERENITY to accept the things I cannot change,

COURAGE to change the things I can, and

WISDOM to know the difference.

Living one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time.

Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace.

Taking this world as it is, not as I would have it.

Trusting that You will make all things right if I surrender to Your will.

So that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with You forever in the next.
