Lyons: LSU changes effecting local recruits

There’s a lot going on up the river these days, and I’m not just talking about the annual building of the bonfires.

I’m talking about the comings and goings at LSU in recent weeks — heck, days! Of course folks in the River Parishes have been keeping a close watch on the proceedings.

Some are fans. Some are Alabama or Mississippi fans. Some are players.

St. James High School’s All-World quarterback Lowell Narcisse got tongues wagging and keyboards clicking last week when he de-committed from LSU.

Actually, in his own words, he didn’t “de-commit,” he just reopened the process.

Like a groom with cold feet, he wanted to see what else was out there.

Some didn’t take too kindly to Narcisse spurning the purple and gold bride, though, and let it be known, insisting there could be no better team to commit to than the LSU Tigers.

Others wondered about the wisdom of a player who suffered not one but two torn ACLs — in different knees — giving up a scholarship in the hand for one that may or not be in the bush.

There were a few who said Narcisse was right to look around while new coach Ed Orgeron got his act together and found the right offensive coordinator.

St. James coach Robert Valdez, acting as Narcisse’s best man through the process, naturally took up for his star player.

“I think he’s just hearing all the voices in his head,” Valdez said. “He got confused. He wants to see what else it out there. He’s a young kid and he has to make the best decision for him.”

Valdez also reminded me that Narcisse has enough credits to forgo his spring semester and graduate early.

After a few false starts and false rumors, Orgeron finally settled on Matt Canada, the former offensive coordinator at Pitt who is said to have more gadget plays than Blue Bell has flavors of ice cream. He certainly isn’t vanilla.

While the hiring certainly didn’t please everyone, it pleased Narcisse, who announced via Twitter Monday that he was re-committing to LSU.

St. Stanislaus quarterback Myles Brennan re-committed too.

I talked to another LSU recruit who shall remain nameless and asked him if he was nervous at all about all the changes going on upriver.

“Nah,” he said. “I’ve been wanting to go to LSU as long as I can remember. As long as they have a coach, I’m good. But I’ve known Coach O forever.”

Where is our All-Star game?

We all know the River Parishes is the hotbed of high school football. The area boasted two state championship football teams and one runner-up team.

We also know that sometimes the River Parishes is like the Island of Misfit Toys.  We can be overlooked for lots of things, including all-star football games.

There was the Red Stick Bowl and the Orleans vs. Jefferson All-Star game, but there is no longer a game for the River Parishes players.  I hope this situation is rectified soon.
