DESTREHAN — Assistance For Single Parents is inviting the community to come out and “Shop Till You Drop” Saturday at the second annual Indoor Flea Market in Destrehan.

“We would like to ask and encourage residents to come out and shop in support of area single parents, who are trying to earn some extra money for the holidays,” board member Karla Yent said of the nonprofit. “Any money they make is theirs to keep.”

More than 300 residents shopped and supported the event in 2015, allowing at least one single parent participant to earn more than $300 that allowed her to use the money to pay for a nice Thanksgiving dinner and some extra Christmas presents for her children.

Assistance For Single Parents anticipates this same level of support. Organizers said shoppers will be looking for good deals, and will still filled with compassion in effort to support someone else who may be in need.

The AFSP Flea Market will take place from 8 to 11 a.m. at the St. Charles United Methodist Church, 1905 Ormond Blvd. in Destrehan. The event is made possible in part by support from Entergy Waterford 3, St. Charles United Methodist Church and St. John United Way.

Assistance For Single Parents is dedicated to assisting employed single parents and their children with empowerment, supportive services and resource referrals, primarily those families caught in the “governmental gap” of working poor and underemployed.
