River Parishes offer many family fun options this fall

St. Joan of Arc Catholic School is hosting a Craft and Garage Sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the SJA Rectory parking lot, 529 W. 5th St. in LaPlace.

Jambalaya, sweets and refreshments are going to be sold.

TEAM LOWRY BENEFIT CONCERT SET

Friends of Team Lowry are gathering to help with the educational expenses of David and Tricia’s six children through a fundraising concert.

Zoso, the ultimate Led Zeppelin Experience formed in 1995, and will perform from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday at St. John Theatre, 115 W. 4th St. in Reserve. Tickets are $30. Call 984-212-1856.

ST. JOSEPH OPENS ‘MOURNING’ TOUR

St. Joseph Plantation, 3535 Highway 18 in Vacherie, is hosting its annual “Mourning Tour” through Nov. 3.

The tours highlight the customs and rituals of 18th and 19th century Creole Louisiana, and the house will be “dressed in full deep mourning,” according to the old prescribed protocol of mourning.

Those who visit this Saturday and Sunday will enjoy live characters portraying some of the people that lived at St. Joseph in their mourning customs.

Visitors are promised to be educated and entertained by these live re-enactments. There will be people portraying Dr. Cazemir Bernard Mericq and Josephine Aime Ferry, who lived at St. Joseph at different times.

NORCO PARADE ROLLS FOR ALL

The 15th annual Norco Christmas Parade will roll at 2 p.m. Dec. 4 through the streets of Norco.

The parade begins at River Road and Washington Avenue, turns north on Good Hope Street, turns west at 5th Street, then travels south on Apple Street.

Following the parade, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be available for free photos at the community Christmas tree, located in the former Capital One Bank lot on Apple Street.

BONFIRE FESTIVAL LIGHTS UP AREA

The 25th celebration of the Festival of the Bonfires promises to pack plenty of fun Dec. 9-11 at Lutcher Park, 2545 Louisiana Ave. in Lutcher.

Some of the entertainment options include live music, gumbo cook-off, potato salad showdown, bread pudding bake off, bonfire lighting and
gingerbread house contest.

Other events include a children’s pageant, 5K run/walk and car show parade.

The Festival of the Bonfires Committee provides the $2,000,000 Liability coverage required by the Pontchartrain Levee Board for the bonfire tradition to continue.

In order to build a bonfire on the levee in St. James Parish, you must have a permit. The cost per permit is $30. Permits will be available at the St. James Welcome Center in Gramercy.

Candy Cane Celebration SET

A Candy Cane Celebration at the Destrehan Plantation mule barn takes place from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Dec. 11, and admission includes “make and take home holiday crafts,” reindeer games and prizes, storytelling by Mrs. Claus, a candy cane hunt and light refreshments of holiday punch, hot chocolate, apple cider and coffee.

Bring your camera and take pictures of your child or children with Santa under the Old Oak Tree.

St. Charles Community Choir and Allemands Elementary Cajun Dancers are providing entertainment.
