LAPLAE — River levels on the Amite are decreasing with levels now in minor flood stage, St. John the Baptist Parish officials said Monday morning.
A persistent drop in river levels is expected and although the threat of backwater flooding remains, water is retreating throughout St. John and dropping in canals and lakes.
The National Weather Service extended the non-life threatening Flood Advisory for southeastern parishes including St. John Parish until 3 p.m. Tuesday as water slowly retreats.
Sand and bags are located at Captain G. Bourgeois and Railroad Avenue, Garyville, Wallace and Pleasure Bend Fire Stations. To register for St. John alerts, visit the homepage of the sjbparish.com and click on “Stay Connected.” Residents are limited to 25 “prefilled” bags of per person and unlimited “fill yourself.”
Residents are encouraged to store sandbags on properties through Hurricane Season.
Authorities have communicated that there should be minimal impacts to St. John.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms are predicted to impact the Parish this week with brief periods of heavy rainfall possible. Due to already saturated conditions, flash flooding could occur in low-lying areas and street flooding continues to be a threat.
The National Weather Service is not predicting a prolonged, widespread heavy rainfall.
