Mason Vicknair, a pitcher for the Pedal Valves American Legion team, was selected as the Greater New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Month for July by the Greater New Orleans Sports Award Selection Committee, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

The Riverside Academy senior posted a 1.00 ERA with 21 strikeouts, allowing just nine hits and four walks over 18 innings  in two complete game victories. He also hit five home runs in the month, batting .392.

Vicknair was selected over five other nominees.

Lutcher High School senior quarterback Jontre Kirklin’s name was misspelled in a feature story that ran in the Aug. 3 L’OBSERVATEUR.

The newspaper regrets the error.
