Girl Scouts reach out to help

DESTREHAN — Eight Girl Scout Cadettes from Destrehan Girl Scout Troop 20024 recently earned the Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette in grades 6-8 can achieve.
The award requires the completion of a series of leadership challenges that are appropriate to their Girl Scout level and prepares them for their final take action project.
With a passion for building awareness of childhood obesity, six of the Cadettes held a fitness workshop that featured dance exercises, healthy eating suggestions and nutritional guidance, with help from local dance teachers, nutritionist and a Weight Watchers consultant.
The participating girls are Isabella Distefano, Sophia Distefano, Bracie Jones, Laurel Kennedy, Laney Lorio and Katelyn Moore.
Their project advisors were Michelle Distefano and Angela Kennedy.
Two Cadettes, also in Troop 20024, used their knowledge from the Journey series, Breathe, to aid them in building awareness about environmental struggles, such as Global Warming, recycling and pollution.

They set up a booth at the Arts and Crafts Fair at St. Charles United Methodist Church to pass out educational pamphlets and host a recycling bin, which yielded two large bags of recyclables by the end of the event.
The participating girls are Yasmeen Hamed and Sophia Matylis. Their project advisor was Michelle Distefano.
