Sister Mary Osanna (Dorothy Therese) Hymel

Sister Mary Osanna (Dorothy Therese) Hymel, O.P., a Dominican Sister of Peace, died on Saturday, June 4, 2016, at Mohun Health Care Center in Columbus, Ohio, in her 70th year of religious profession at age 88.
She was born in Edgard, the daughter of the late Numa Joseph Hymel Sr. and Marie Louise Schexnayder Hymel.
Sister Mary Osanna earned a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from St. Mary’s Dominican College in New Orleans. She taught at St. Anthony of Padua, St. John the Baptist, and St. Matthias in New Orleans, St. Peter in Reserve, Mater Dolorosa in Independence, Holy Ghost in Hammond, St. Peter Chanel in Paulina, and for 26 years at St. Joan of Arc in LaPlace.
At the age of 17, Sister entered the Dominican Sisters in New Orleans, with her early formation at Rosaryville. Professed on June 29, 1946, she celebrated 70 years of consecrated life this year, with 50 of them dedicated to ministry with children.
After retiring from the classroom, Sister remained at St. Joan of Arc in LaPlace, acting as assistant librarian for eight years.
During her time there she had many extracurricular duties: working with the Social studies Fair, supervising children at football games and assisting with the coordination of the Carnival Ball. Even in the summer months she remained to assist with the preparations for the coming year.

Louise Schexnayder Hymel; sisters Ruth H. Kliebert, Maizie H. Jacob, Estelle
- Duhe, Louise H. Remondet and Shirley Hymel; brothers Daniel G. Hymel Sr.,
Numa J. Hymel Jr. and Ray Hymel Sr.
She is survived by sister-in-laws Melba D. Hymel and Edwina D. Hymel; brother-in-law Dennis Remondet; numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and great-grand nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 28 at St. Peter Catholic Church, 1550 Louisiana 44 in Reserve, with a Vigil Service beginning at 7 p.m.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 29 at Rosaryville Spirit Life Center, 39003 Rosaryville Road in Ponchatoula on by the Rev. Ray A. Hymel, nephew of Sister Mary Osanna.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. and last until Mass time. Interment will be in the Dominican Sisters of Peace Cemetery in Rosaryville following Mass.
