Parish Council looking to name District 7 representative soon

LAPLACE — District 4 Councilman Marvin Perrilloux said the St. John the Baptist Parish Council should have the name of an interim Council member for the position of District 7 councilman by Tuesday.
The space will become vacant since Buddy Boe will be resigning his position Tuesday after the Council meeting.
While Council members hope to have a name by Tuesday, Perrilloux said, as of this week officials don’t have a name.
“I guess the other councilmen didn’t expect Mr. Boe to resign,” he said. “No name has been floating out there. Personally, I haven’t given it much thought.”
The interim Council member will occupy the seat until a special election can be called, Perrilloux said, adding officials plan to have it on the ballot for the presidential election in the fall.
Boe said he would most likely recommend someone for this position.
“I haven’t even gotten to that point (of a recommendation) yet,” he said. “Once I’m off the Council, I technically have no vote in it. If the council doesn’t name someone within 30 days, then I believe the charter allows the parish president to name a replacement, but that has never happened before.”
The individual elected in the fall, Boe said, would hold the position through the end of the term then run for re-election in 2019.
Boe is stepping down as district 7 councilman to take the position of senior advisor and communications director for Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser.
Perrilloux said he wasn’t surprised when he heard the news.
“I know Mr. Boe wanted to work in upper government and better things for himself,” Perrilloux said. “He personally called me Sunday and gave me the information so I wouldn’t get it second hand off the street. He told me what he planned on doing and I wished him well.”
From what Perrilloux has heard from the community Boe’s resignation has had a negative impact on residents in his district.
“Together (the council) can still represent that area until a replacement is there,” Perrilloux said. “Whatever the needs are for district 7, we have council members that will step forward and help with the area’s needs.”
Boe said Nungesser approached him in late April after his previous communications director had resigned.
“It was more of a conversation than an offer, then over time it turned into a formal negotiation,” Boe said. “This wasn’t easy. Last year I had great support from volunteers to residents who voted for me and from partners across the region who’ve I’ve worked with for a number of years on different projects. There were also people that donated to my campaign.”
The soon-to-be former Councilman said he looks forward to promoting to the country and the world the phenomenal assets that are Louisiana.
With the recent successes in Washington D.C. edging residents one step closer to levee protection, Boe felt it was a safe time for him to leave.
“We’ve worked hard these five and a half months moving the levee forward as quickly as we can,” he said. “I’ll be presenting another resolution Tuesday night (at the parish council meeting) to make another step forward of committing this parish to constructing that levee.
“I ran (during the election) on moving that levee forward and working to get it towards construction, and I think we’ve done that.”
