Staff members at L’OBSERVATEUR are proud to premier our latest publication, “Through Our Eyes,” this Saturday as part of all home-delivery copies of the newspaper, as well as in each copy sold through our racks and dealers.
“Through Our Eyes” is the second of a yearly series the newspaper began in 2015 as a once-a-year community spotlight piece highlighting some of the most newsworthy feature elements our unique community has to share.
This year’s theme, reflected in the title, tells some of our most interesting stories through the very newsmakers who drove their narratives in the first place.
Take, for example, the story of Christina Green Davis, who made history in 1965 when she was in high school in St. John the Baptist Parish as the first black student to cross the color line and attend a white school.
Davis’ mother, Lillie Mae, was the secretary of the local NAACP chapter.
On her first day of school, Davis’ mother got the president of the NAACP and a few other gentlemen to escort Davis and her mother to school on Aug. 30, 1965.
“You could have heard a pin drop when I arrived,” Davis said. “They brought me into the assembly, which was in the gymnasium. That was the beginning of nine months of being called names, racial slurs and pranks.”
There is also the story of LaPlace native Travis Broussard, who recounts his own journey from addiction.
Today, he leads Impressions Works LCC — a company he founded — with offices locally and abroad.
“It’s been 11 years since my miracle happened and my life was completely changed,” he said. “Some days it seems so long ago, but when I get to share my story with others who are struggling — with addicts and alcoholics — everything comes back to me like it was yesterday.”
Their accomplishments, on large stages and in personal battles, are two of a half-dozen we feel will greatly inform our neighbors about the everyday people in our community who do amazing things.
Be sure to check out and save a copy of “Through Our Eyes” this Saturday.
