Keller: Valentine’s gifts offered to many

Until this past Monday, I had never heard of Sky View High School in Smithfield, Utah, or Hayden Godfrey, a 17-year-old student.

In a world where bad news sells metro newspapers and the TV news stations are anxious to report crime and corruption, positive stories are usually ignored or hidden in a section of metro papers that are seldom read.

This past week, there was a small article in a statewide newspaper about Valentine’s Day and what happened because of what a compassionate classmate at Sky View High School decided to do.

Hayden Godfrey planned over a year ago to work two jobs as a cook and a dishwasher and save money to make Valentine’s Day special for all 834 females at the school.

It cost him $450 to buy each girl a carnation and delivered each one himself.

I shared this story at a Bible sharing meeting Tuesday and everyone seemed impressed.

The questions were:

“I wonder if he was a Christian?”

“Why would a person spend everything he earned in a year washing dishes do that?”

“Was it to impress the faculty?”

No one in the group knew the answers. The only thing I know is that the young man evidently had a servant’s heart.

He didn’t want anyone to be left out. If he isn’t a Christian, he acted the way Christians should. Being a Christian means trying to be like Christ. Hayden’s generous gift was accepted by all.

This touching story reminds me of Jesus and His free gift of salvation. His offer is to all, but we must decide to accept it.

He paid the price.
