Keller: Self-discipline keys our ability to stay focused

Parents will say that they are happy their child is in athletics or in the military and pleased about a school with a strong and consistent code of conduct.
The reason being that all demand discipline. I agree, but what happens after these chapters in their lives are over.
Is the training that develops self-control, character, orderliness and efficiency carried on with self-discipline after they leave the structured environments they were accustomed to?
It’s then that a person will decide if self-discipline will be part of his or her character.
Self-discipline is the key to a successful, happy, healthy and prosperous life.
In Proverbs 25:28, the Bible warns: “He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.”
In the Old Testament, cities built walls around them to protect them from any invasion of the enemy.
Without walls, they existed unprotected.
It’s the same with people.
Without discipline they allow temptation to distract them and be easily defeated in their walk with God.
The following scriptures will keep us protected and focused on God’s plan for our life:
Proverbs 15:32, “He who disdains instruction (neglects discipline) despises his own soul, …”
Proverbs 23:12, “Apply your heart to instruction (discipline), and your ears to the words of knowledge.”
I Timothy 4:7-8, “Discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness, for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.”
