Poche awarded Marie Ory Dupont Scholarship

- At SCC to present the annual scholarship in Marie’s name is her mother, Joan Ory. Junior Shea Poche received the $2,000 SCC scholarship.
LAPLACE — The Marie Ory Dupont $2,000 SCC Tuition scholarship was created by Dupont’s family and friends as a way to pay it forward to other students and their families in order to continue with a Catholic education at SCC.
A graduate of St. Charles Catholic High School in 2000, Dupont was voted Outstanding Student of the Year her senior year. She received a degree in mass communications from Nicholls State University, where she served as editor of the Nicholls Worth.
Dupont earned her masters in journalism from the University of Louisiana Lafayette. Her love for her alma mater brought her back to St. Charles Catholic, where she served devotedly for five years as development director. Dupont passed away in 2011, and she is dearly missed by all whose lives she touched.
Shea Poche was awarded the 2016 Marie Ory Dupont Scholarship, and she will receive $2,000 towards her SCC tuition.
Joan Ory, Marie Ory Dupont’s mother, recently announced Poche as the 2016 scholarship winner after a schoolwide Mass at St. Charles Catholic High School.
In honor of Shea and Catholic Schools Week, here is an excerpt from her winning essay:
“To the normal eye, I may be just an ordinary teenage student. To the faculty, staff and St. Charles Catholic family I am so much more. I am a piece of a chain of numerous links that unites the entire SCC community. Together we are a family with a bond that won’t be broken. Young or old, near or far, the Comet chain can never be broken nor any of its members forgotten. Even after graduating, I will proudly represent all the goodness and blessings that make up St. Charles Catholic High School. Knowing that my family at SCC will always be behind me, supporting me even after I’m gone, will remind me of all that God has granted me as well as instill in me determination to continue in my work of helping other get to Heaven.”
Brittney Champagne, Noah Jacob and Shelbi St. Pierre received consolation awards of $100 each because of the high quality of their essays.
